Built in 1061, the sixth year of Emperor Jiayou's reign in the Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127), the Penglai Pavilion is a famous coastal tourist site in eastern China's Shandong Province. It is seated on the cliff of Danya Mountain close to the sea in the north of Penglai City. For the mirage, because Penglai sits on the southern tip of the Bohai Straits, the low temperature of the sea water and the high temperature along the coast result in the appearance of spectacular optical illusions. |

Penglai is world famous coastal tour city where summer is mild for sightseeing and holidays. The midseason here is from July to September. Travelers, however, come here all year round in recent years because of their changed ideas toward tourism. The best time to tour the park is between 8 and 10 in the morning or 3 and 5 in the afternoon. Also enjoyable is a walk along the beaches in the early morning for sunrise sight or a swim in the bathing beach in the evening. On the sides of streets or at street corners, KTV, barbecue and local flavor dishes are available. |

East of the pavilion is the Penglai water city, one of the oldest military harbors in ancient China, where there were facilities like dry docks, piers and emplacements, all against hills overlooking the sea. It is appointed together with Penglai Pavilion as key historic relics protected by the state. |

Besides enjoying seeing the area, visitors can experience local customs. Temple Fair is a traditional annual activity. January 16th by the lunar calendar is regarded as Tianhou's birthday, so local people from near and far go to Tianhou Palace to pray. At that time, locals present a wonderful performance. |

Five flights every day take off from Shanghai Pudong International Airport to Yantai Airport and the flight takes about one hour. Or tourists can take Train No. 2582 departing from Shanghai Railway Station at 9:40am and arriving at Yantai at 7:00am. It connects with many major airports across the country, and also with Seoul, Macao and Hong Kong airports. Yantai Airport is about 50 minutes' ride from Penglai Pavilion.
From Penglai to Yantai, a bus departs every 15 minutes from 6:00
to18:00 every day (around one hour, CNY 10). |
